Rinnai balances performance with decarbonisation at large Scottish University.
One of the most prestigious and historic colleges in Scotland upgraded the hot water supply in a sizable housing complex by installing a Rinnai Hybrid heating system, which immediately fixed issues with the previous Low-GWP heat pump setup.

The project was initially started in September 2022 with the goal of using a two-unit heat pump system with a 60kW total output to supply all the hot water needs of the 102-bedroom apartment tower. The specification was revised to include only ONE 30 kW heat pump. The outcome was utterly insufficient to meet the needs for hot water in the shared kitchen, common areas, and bedrooms.
To address the problem, Rinnai were called to re-design and rebuilt the system. After considering the site's practical, economical, and practical aspects, the best option was chosen. Consequently, a turnkey solution including two I2HY20 Hydrogen blend ready continuous flow water heaters along with a cylinder and expansion vessel is offered as part of a hybrid heat pump and gas-fired system. Since the installation of the new system in January 2023, there have been no issues with the continuous, temperature-controlled hot water demand supply available around-the-clock.
Rinnai provides design support that considers the particularities of each site and generates a solution that takes carbon modelling, capital expense, and operating expenditure into account.
Remarks Pete Seddon, Rinnai's technical manager “It wasn't until after the initial installation that it was discovered that the original drawings appeared to have no significant provision for maintaining the water temperature within the system. Recovery and storage temperature were crucial. Furthermore, the site's additional atmospheric conditions caused the heat pump's effectiveness to decrease even operating at a mere -5 degrees outside, and Scotland does, of course, experience some severe winter weather”.
The first continuous flow hot water heating unit made with stainless steel heat exchangers is the gas-fired Rinnai Sensei N 1600i. It provides a significantly longer service life at peak efficiency. The industry-best extended warranties that come with these appliances that are prepared for blending hydrogen are an additional bonus. With its more compact and improved combustion architecture, the Rinnai N1600i boasts higher operating performance, ease of maintenance, and installation convenience.
The two N1600s on campus at this Scottish institution can provide over 2000 litres of temperature-controlled continuous flow hot water that is appropriate for commercial purposes; the N1600i can produce 954 litres per hour.
The future-proofed continuous flow water heater uses Rinnai's unique advanced burner technology, which has the greatest turn down ratio on the market (13-1) and exceptionally silent operation. The entire range is also low-NOx. The water heater's improved burner control and high modulation ranges are made possible by integral controls on the units. Due to the water heater's wide range of modulation, energy consumption is fully optimised because it only heats water to the necessary temperature thanks to intelligent built-in controls meaning the LOW-GWP heat pumps provide most of the load.
Additionally, Rinnai provides a full range low-gwp heat pumps cylinders and ancillary heat sources in both electrical and gaseous format providing a complete hybrid heating system. Rinnai technical support services, including a complimentary design service that integrates the best heating and hot water system according to the needs and specifications of the customer's property. Savings on purchase and operating expenses, as well as lowering carbon emissions, are guaranteed by a hot water and heating system tailored to the unique requirements of any location or application.
